A group of second-year medical students at the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM) recently completed a video project related to stress urinary incontinence for the Meridian-based Idaho Urologic Institute (IUI).

Student-Doctors Gina Brock, Jarom Ruby and Samantha Mallory produced a two-part video series for the IUI, containing information pertaining to the diagnosis and treatment of stress urinary incontinence. The first video detailed what patients may expect from their primary physician and urologic specialist during the diagnosis and treatment processes of stress urinary incontinence, while the second video emphasized the diagnosis and treatment of female stress urinary incontinence.

“Jarom and I aspire to be OB/GYN physicians. Learning how to treat pelvic floor dysfunctions and urinary incontinence in women is part of that training,” said Student-Doctor Brock. “Through this experience, we learned more about the surgical repair of stress urinary incontinence and how to develop our skills in presenting an illness to a physician, as well as explaining the diagnosis and treatment of that illness to a patient. If a physician can do both well, then they likely have a deeper understanding of the condition.”

The video series was judged by a panel of physicians at IUI, including Drs. Joseph H. Williams and Lisa Parrillo. The students received a financial award for their efforts.
