The Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM) hosted its fourth annual Community Health Fair on Saturday, Feb. 24, providing a variety of health services to nearly 80 members of the community.
Organized by ICOM’s Student Health Fair Committee and Student Government Association, this event, hosted on the College’s Meridian-based campus, was free and open to the public.
Participants, ages 18 and older, received a complimentary physical exam screening, blood pressure screening, vision exam, and osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) demonstrations, among other services. ICOM Student Doctors also offered educational sessions throughout the day on topics including osteopathic manipulative treatment, melanoma, breast cancer, and cholesterol.
“The ICOM Health Fair is an amazing opportunity to provide care and resources to those who may not have access otherwise,” said Student Doctor Tyler Lindsey, a second-year student at ICOM and Community Outreach Chair. “It is extremely important for us as students to find ways to give back to the community. The health fair gives us an avenue to apply what we are learning in medical school to help the same community that is giving us the opportunity to pursue our medical careers.”
Additionally, the Saint Alphonsus Mobile Mammography Bus was on-site, with healthcare providers providing digital mammography and clinical breast exams in a comfortable and convenient setting. Central District Health was also be on-site, offering blood sugar and cholesterol testing. A limited supply of food boxes, courtesy of The Boise Rescue Mission Ministries, was also available to those in need.
Approximately 77 community members attended the event to obtain complimentary health services, connect with area providers and students, and learn more about wellness opportunities in the community.
